Laughable Jonathan’s after thought

As I write this piece, President Goodluck Jonathan is on visit to the two troubled states of Borno and Yobe almost two years after the security situation in the area in particular and the nation in general had degenerated to a frightening level thereby making life to become short, nasty and brutish.
Present Jonathan has all the while left the people of the North-EAST to face their tragedies and saw no reason why top government officials like him, Vice President Namadi Sambo or even the military chief, who deployed troops to the states, should visit the areas and commiserate with the people.
Despite Amnesty International report that troops had committed serious crimes against humanity, neither the president nor his vice or any of the military chiefs except the NSA visited the area in 2012. Lately, the vice president was in Borno and his comments on why President Jonathan could not visit the area was to say the least unfortunate and tragic. The vice president told the people of the region and the world that the president was too busy and as such he couldn’t visit a territory within the federation he is presiding over where thousands of lives had been lost to insurgencies over time.
I wonder what work the president was doing in Abuja that denied him the time to visit such area when clearly we see that the work the president is doing is only noticeable in the negative because there is still no light, power, the economy has not improved and the level of infractions in government not out of the way.
In any case, the failure to visit Borno, Yobe, Gombe and other troubled states of the North East has only confirmed the fact that the president doesn’t have the leadership capacity Nigeria requires.
He was in Borno and Yobe only after the governors of the new alliance went to MAIDUGURI, HELD A MEETING AND WALKED THROUGH THE so-called ‘volatile’ areas that the president and his men are now caught flat-footed and in shame thus organizing a visit as an afterthought.
The failure and the sudden change of heart to visit the ‘excised’ Nigeria by a president who claim their mandate is again a clear manifestation of yet another gigantic political blunder that is irredeemable. President Jonathan has failed woefully too.
The government, especially the president is held hostage by a cabal of very unintelligent people who are certainly not thinking about Nigeria but probably very micro and thus responsible for the deep-seated national crises that we face as a nation.
The visit by the APC Governors to Maiduguri and the walk in the market only shows one fact that after all, the problems in the state and other areas got out of hand due to the unwillingness of the federal state to show sufficient concerns for the lives of the people in the area. The manner the governors were received, cheered and appreciated by the people of Maiduguri shows that the government in Abuja truly is working with some difficulty.
Out of that confusion, the states of Borno and Yobe were literarily shut down because the president was visiting. A visit that was belated and unnecessary at this crucial time, is in my view a political miscalculation that President Jonathan will reap at the appropriate time.
When France led Nigeria and other countries to go to Mali, the French President came visiting on his troops immediately. At the peak of the Gulf War, George W Bush, US President, was at hand in Baghdad. So has been the case all over the world but in Nigeria, it can’t happen.
The best that President Jonathan could do was to approve the request of the army chief for troop deployment and both the president and his army chief didn’t care all this while how their troops were doing talk less of those innocent people under the insurgency in the various areas of the country. This is a shame and a major minus to Goodluck Jonathan and his government.
The battle for 2015 is on with BAMANGA DECLARATION AND THE Abuja court verdict, President Jonathan is ready to eat back his own words as such, campaign time is on so off he goes to Borno and Yobe states so that we won’t say he is coming in 2014 just for our votes. What a blunder from the highest level of government where body of knowledge is supposed to have its sanctuary!
When a friend told me that he heard Ahmed Gulak, the presidential assistant on political matters saying the president does not need Borno and Yobe states, I wasn’t enraged, instead.
Whatever the case may be, the president got it all wrong. The message is very clear. The presidency in Nigeria today is remote and sectional. It will appear like that the president continuously lack the capacity to execute the decisions of the Nigerian state with fairness. He is surrounded by people who are equally micro in thoughts and actions.
The crisis in the North East was and may be still seen by most President’s men as simply a Northern problem and as such they should be allowed to finish themselves. In fact in certain quarters, the conspiracy theory is that if the crisis is attended to, power may eventually be taken off Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. At all cost therefore, the violence must abate so that the 2015 elections would be held under the watch eye of the military thus under emergency situation so that they could declare whatever results they wish at the end of the elections that may not hold after all.
With the bombs sharply reduced and the likelihood of headway in the North Eastern flank, the thinkers of this government appear uncomfortable and they are further diminished by the attitude of the APC governors.
My word on this is that everyone is made of his attitude and such attitude reflects on the personality of the individual.
When we criticize people in authority, we do that strictly on the basis of their choices and options in relation to our objective realities. No malice is meant at this stage, what some of us desire is to bequeath a legacy of institutions that are working for our children. This is attainable if those in positions of authority deploy sufficient resources in decision-making without recourse to either selfishness, nepotism or any form of incapacity occasion by our weaknesses as leaders.
