Aiyegbeni, Obafemi missing on Amodu’s 21-man list

Super Eagles Coach, Shuaibu Amodu yesterday released the 21-man list of Super Eagles players invited to camp for the September 6 World Cup qualifier match against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.
The list, made up of three goalkeepers, six defenders, six midfielders and five attackers, was however without Everton of England recuperating attacker Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Wolfsburg of Germany sharp shooter Obafemi Martins.
The invited players are goalkeepers Vincent Enyeama, Austin Ejide and Dele Aiyenugba. Others are Taye Taiwo, Joseph Yobo, Dele Adeleye, Olubayo Adefemei, Yusuf Mohammed, Apam Onyekachie and Elderson Echejile.
The rest are captain Kanu Nwankwo, Sani Kaita, Mikel Obi, Seyi Olofinjana, Femi Ajilore, Kalu Uche, Obinna Nsofor, Ikechukwu Uche, Mihael Eneramo, Osaze Odemmwingie and Chinedu Ogbuke.
Amodu explained to sports reporters at a media briefing at the Nigeria Football Federation secretariat in Abuja that the duo of Obafemi and Ayegbeni were left out of the September 7 World Cup duel due to lack of match fitness, arising from the injuries they suffered during the 2008/2009 English Premiership season.
He said while they are still waiting for the result of the medical report recently carried out on Aiyegbeni after a league match, it was confirmed that Obafemi was yet to regain full fitness after the injury he sustained while at Newcastle.
Amodu explained that the technical crew could not draft any of the home-based players to the team because of the crucial nature of the three remaining World Cup qualifiers, which the country needs to win to hoist her flag at the South Africa 2010 mundial.
‘The three remaining World Cup qualifying matches are must be win for Nigeria if we should qualify for South Africa 2010 World Cup, and that is why we have decided not to toy with it by bringing in home-based players, they can still come in but not at this stage’, Amodu stated.
