Tornadoes battle Bukola Babes in New Year derby

One of the most sought after games in the Nigeria Premier League will come up in Kaduna today, where Niger Tornadoes will play host to high riding Bukola Babes at their new home ground in Kaduna.
The clash, is unarguably considered as one of the biggest league matches in the domestic league because of the current form of the two sides and the sound technical bench enjoyed by both teams.The two clubs face-off at the Kaduna Township Stadium, one of the venues that hosted matches of the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
While Bukola boasts of one of the best technical bench this term, led by Festus Allen, with gifted ball winners like Otu-Bassey Effiong, Abubakar Yusuf, Moronfade Adebayo, Evika Samson and Aigbe Stanley; Tornadoes which has Samson Thomson at the head of its technical crew, parades skilful and resourceful players like Andrew Ighado, Daddy Bazuaye, Lukman Mohammed and Emmanuel Egbeta who can weave a winning pattern on a good day.
Bukola is in the 14th position, while their hosts Niger Tornadoes are occupying the 16th position on the log.
Another match that would have drawn the attention of soccer fans this week is the one involving Kano Pillars and host JUTH FC of Jos.
The match has been postponed until further notice as a result of a series of bomb blasts in Jos which left at least 34 people dead and more than 100 others seriously injured.
“We have decided to put off the game until peace has finally returned to Jos. This decision was taken for the safety of the players,” disclosed NPL acting executive secretary, Tunji Babalola, who added that no new date has been fixed for the encounter.
A series of bomb blasts ripped through the north central town of Jos on Christmas eve and in the end Nigerian authorities announced that at least 34 people were killed and several others injured.
A player of NPL outfit Plateau United, Olayinka Olaniyi, who has his left leg and face badly hit by the blast has since undergone surgery at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital in Jos.
The Tornadoes versus Bukola Babes encounter will be played in Kaduna after the Nigeria Premier League ordered that Tornadoes and Bukola Babes shift their home games from the Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna because of sub-standard facilities.
Tornadoes have since picked Kaduna as their new home, while Bukola Babes will play their home games in Bauchi.
Also today, Kwara United will host Ocean Boys in Shagamu; Gombe battle Shooting Stars and newly crowned WAFU kings Sharks will host champions Enyimba.
On Sunday, league leaders Sunshine Stars face a difficult game away at Kaduna United.
Sunshine Stars are most likely to be without league hot shot Ukeyima Akombo, who has been excused for this game.
Crown will be home to Dolphin, Heartland take on Lobi Stars and Enugu Rangers square up with Plateau United.
