As the Congress of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) converges on Abuja today, there are strong indications that the meeting will be stormy, with congressmen voting against the proposal by the NFF Executive Committee for a shift in the date of the Federation’s election.
Meanwhile, world football governing body, FIFA yesterday said it would okay Nigeria’s polls extension if the decision comes from NFF congress.
Speaking to reporters shortly after a closed door meeting with the Electoral Committee in Abuja, Mr. Simon Corvaerio, Manager FIFA Member Association said any decision taken by the congress will be accepted as a legitimate act.
“If the decision to shift the election is taken by the congress, FIFA will accepts it as a legitimate one”, Corvaerio stated.
The two chambers of the National Assembly also called on the Nigeria Football Federation Executive Committee headed by Aminu Maigari to shift the election from today, but the Committee said it has no power to put the election off.
The NFF Executive Committee after a marathon meeting on Thursday recommend to the congress the postponement of its elections fixed for this today.
NFF Executive Committee member Abubakar Ladan told reporters after the meeting that “The executive committee of the NFF have noted the complaints and concerns over the forthcoming elections and have therefore unanimously agreed to recommend to the congress for a postponement of the elections”.
But some state football association chairmen, who form the congress of the Federation are canvassing for the conduct of the election as planned, raising concern that today’s meeting will not produce the needed result.
Borno State Football Association Chairman Babagana Kalli, told Trustsports by phone yesterday that the election would go ahead as plan because that was the content of their invitation to Abuja.
Kalli, who accused the Federation of changing the goal post in the middle of the game, however commended the Executive for respecting the rule of law by recommending to the congress the need to shift the election date.
“I don’t support the call for shift in the election date; let the election hold tomorrow as planed because that is what we are coming to Abuja to do.
“I salute the NFF Executive Committee for proposing to the congress the need for shift in election date because the Executive Committee does not have the right to extend the date, it is only the congress that can decide whether the election would hold or not; but my opinion is that the election should go ahead”, Kalli stated.
Another state FA Chairman who preferred to remain anonymous argued that the NFF Executive Committee is answerable to the Congress and not the other way round, and therefore cannot be dictating to the Congress what to do.
