BUK athletes protest non-payment of allowances

Football and hockey players of host Bayero University, Kano (BUK) have protested non payment of their complete allowances as promised by the school’s sports directorate.
It was gathered yesterday evening that when the athletes were invited to collect their remaining allowances and were given N10,000 each, the protesting athletes rejected the offer outright, saying it contravened their collective agreement.
The players, who spoke to our correspondent under the condition of anonymity, said what they were given as their allowance was not what they were earlier promised.
According to them, they were earlier paid N21,000 as camping allowance and the school authorities promised that the subsequent payment for their participation in the ongoing West African University Games (WAUG) would be doubled or even tripled.
Both grumbling soccer and hockey players were seen last night at the entrance into office of the school’s Director of Sports discussing the issue.
“This is really unacceptable, and we can not accept N10,000 as our allowances,” wielding a hockey stick playfully, a BUK player said.
A player in the school’s soccer team also corroborated his hockey colleague’s claim, saying they were short-changed and they would not accept N10,000 as he said at least N20,000 will be manageable.
“They told us that the participation allowance would at least double or triple the camping allowance. Surprisingly, we were confronted with a pittance,” said the player.
When contacted for comment, BUK’s director of sports Alhaji Isyaku Ibrahim said he was not aware of the cause of their grievances. He said he was not around when they stormed his office, and when he returned he summoned the players to hear from them.
“I am not in the picture of what is happening. But I summoned them to hear from them,” he said.
