The gradual improvement the Super Eagles have made at the African Cup of Nations in Angola is an indication that the team will surprise Africa by playing in the final of the tournament. This was the position of the erstwhile handler of the Super Falcons, Jossy Lad, when he spoke to Trustsports yesterday in a telephone interview.
Jossy Lad who commended the Coach Amodu-led Eagles for the emphatic 3-0 victory they handed Mozambique in their last group match, saying the victory has gone to show that given the necessary support, Eagles are capable of beating any team in the tournament.
“The Eagles lost their first match to the Egyptians 3-1, a result which made Nigerians to call for the head of Amodu. But, in their second match, they were able to beat Benin 1-0, though it was not a convincing performance. Against Mozambique, Eagles recorded a resounding victory against a team they laboured to beat in Abuja during the World Cup qualifier.
“Looking at the progression, one will agree that Eagles have changed from the ones that lost scandalously to the Pharaohs. The boys have shown that they are capable of meeting the semi finals target set for them,” he stated.
While pleading with Nigerians to exercise some restraint in their calls for Amodu’s sack, the veteran coach advised the Edo-born soccer tactician and his team to discard such calls and focus on the Nations Cup proper. “Call for the sack of a coach in the middle of the tournament is very much uncalled for. What else do Nigerians want the coach to do? You give somebody a job to deliver a semi finals spot for you. The man is one match away from achieving the mandate and some people are calling for his head. Are such calls reasonable?
“My advice to Amodu and his team is not to look back in their bid to bring the cup to Nigeria. If they concentrate too much on such criticisms, they may get distracted and fail to realise their target at the end of the day, he counselled.
He maintained that if Nigeria can continue from where they stopped against Mozambique, it will be a daunting task for the Chipolopolo to avoid a defeat against the Eagles, whose strikers suddenly discovered their deadly form.
