Scrabble federation to hunt for talent at collegiate games

Toke Aka, the President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), has promised to pay more attention to talent hunt from collegiate competitions in 2010 to enhance the sport’s development.
Aka told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Lagos that the step became necessary because many of the national team players were got from tertiary institutions.
He said the University of Ilorin had promised the NSF the use of its hall for the 2nd edition of the Collegiate Championships slated for Ilorin next year.Aka said the institution made the pledge at the maiden edition of the tournament on Sept. 19 in Ilorin.
``The NSF achieved this as part of its grassroots development programme in the outgoing year, and hopes to continue with that next year,’’ he said.Aka said that in spite of the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities this year, the championship was attended by 625 players from 25 universities.
He blamed the not too impressive performance of Nigeria at the December World Championship in Malaysia on developments in the sport globally.Aka said Nigeria did not perform better in Malaysia than it did in 2007 in India where it produced the third and ninth ranked players in the world.
``What it shows is that the world is not sleeping as far as scrabble is concerned,’’ he saidThe NSF chief said that funding would not hinder the federation’s activities in the new year, describing scrabble as a ``self sustaining sport.’’ (NAN)
