Foreign assistant will be good for Amodu - Lumumba

As the debate on the suitability or otherwise of Coach Amodu Shaibu to lead the Super Eagles to the 2010 World Cup continues unabated, former member of the House of Representatives and NFA Chairmanship aspirant, Honourable Lumumba Dah Adeh has said instead of sacking the coach, he should be provided with a foreign assistant.
Speaking to Trustsports, the football administrator said he does not subscribe to the idea of replacing the Edo State born football tactician with an expatriate coach but if there is need to beef up the technical crew, an experienced foreigner should be contracted to provide assistance for the coach.
He said those who feel Amodu does not have the technical ability to lead the team to the World Cup may have reasons for making such calls but the right thing to do is to leave the coach in charge of the team and then get somebody that can complement what he has to offer.
“In my candid opinion, we should not sack Amodu. Even if he is not the best coach, he has qualified the country for the World Cup and should be allowed to take the team to South Africa 2010. If necessary, he should be provided with a foreign assistant”.
He called on the coach to emulate his colleague Samson Siasia who normally contracts a foreign assistant each time he is handed a serious national assignment.
Lumumba said Amodu is now a big coach and should be able to pay for a foreign assistant even if nobody is willing to foot the bills of the coach he may contract.
“What Siasia does is to contract a foreign coach to assistant him. He has done this on several occasions and I think this is one of the reasons why he has continued to succeed. If Amodu will follow in Siasia’s footsteps, I think he will surely benefit.
“He is a big coach who should have the wherewithal to contract a foreign assistant. It will do him a lot of good and so even if the authorities are not willing to support him, he should be able to pay from his pocket”.
Lumumba in addition said Amodu’s performance at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations will determine how far the Eagles would go in the World Cup in South Africa.
He said if the players put their acts together, they would be able to bring back their confidence and from there go on to achieve even better results at the 2010 World Cup.
“Many people have written off the Super Eagles but I still believe with they still have something to offer but the key to success is nothing other than early preparations” he said.
