Kano clubs’ rivalry delays amateur league fixtures

The failure of two Kano-based clubs to agree on their home ground has delayed fixtures for the National Amateur League Division One 2009/2010 season.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new season in the 41-club top tier of the three-division league with four groups is to start on Dec. 12
This led the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to organise a pre-season seminar/draws for the league at the FIFA Goal Project at the Abuja National Stadium on Nov. 24.
However, it was only the pre-season seminar that could hold at the occasion which had Tijani Yusuf, a former NFA Secretary-General, as the lead paper presenter.
Emmanuel Adesanya, Secretary of the National Amateur League Unit of NFF’s National Competitions Department, told NAN that the draws could not hold.
He attributed it to the disagreement between the two clubs on the choice of a common home ground.
``Because of the local rivalry between the clubs, there was a disagreement on the venue they will use and then we had a problem.
``This meant we could not do the draws, which would have helped us to draw up the fixtures,’’ he said.
The NFF official said he had earlier received warnings that it would be dangerous for the federation to allow the two clubs make use of the same home ground.
``We had been told that it would be a problem to allow both clubs use the same venue for their matches.
``It was a warning we later realised we must take very seriously,’’ he said.
Adesanya named the two clubs as One-Touch FC and Jarma United FC, both based in Kano.
He said that they were both placed in Group 1C of the season’s 2009/2010 National Amateur League Division One.
Adesanya told NAN that this had brought about the need for the NFF to take another look at a situation whereby more than one club are from a state in the league.
``We just have to be careful, and this is why we are now taking another look at states like Kano with four clubs in division one, the FCT with five and Lagos with four,’’ Adesanya said.
He said the National Amateur League Unit would soon come up with the fixtures ahead of Dec. 12. (NAN)
