To my husband and I, the death of Sulaiman was the second blow in a month in which we had already lost a very near and dear one. On Monday June 3rd , I had woken up with a resolve to call and re-condole my friend Dr Hadiza Nuhu, on the first anniversary of the death of her eldest daughter, Amina Idris Bugaje; a victim of the Dana plane crash of last year. Little did I know that before the day was over, I will myself be receiving fresh condolences from others.

Suleiman Mohammed, or ‘Malam Suleiman’ as we mostly called him, has by now had all manners of tributes written and published about him to the point of cliché. But there’s nothing clichéd about his understated gentlemanliness, his legendary patience and kindness or even his ever-present listening ear. I have known him for well over a decade, from when I was an early-teen member of staff for the now-defunct The Democrat newspaper in Kaduna. I was still in secondary school but penning a series of cartoons for the paper and I had the quietest office, away from the madness of the newsroom and Malam Suleiman would pop in whenever he’s around (he was Abuja-based), pore over my latest work excitedly and sit behind my desk for a power nap after a hard day’s work. In minutes, he’d awaken and be off.
