Until the bombs exploded on the 25th December, 2011, I was almost certain that the nature and degree of insurgency we see across the country especially in the Northern part was a mere reflection of the social crisis that the society has found itself in. I am an advocate of social justice as the resolution to social crisis. So it is and so it shall always be. The manner of coordination and the objectives for which the bombs of the 25th December were meant to achieve however created a space in my thinking that after all, it may not be as much as we expect and as correct as we think we are. To throw bombs around the premises of churches when Christians were worshipping on the Christmas day in my view is much more sophisticated development than simply an activity of a group which the nation’s intelligence forces have since told us is a small circle of renegades that would be overcome soonest.

In the last few days, and indeed weeks, the nation has faced protracted debate over its economic policies and the future of the citizens. The most contentious debate of the year and in fact last few months has been the campaign by government of Goodluck Jonathan to withdraw subsidies on petroleum products so that Nigerians would henceforth buy refined products, the most popular of which is PMS otherwise called petrol at deregulated rate. This is a development which many of us are of the view that will lead to the sky rocketing of cost of living in an already over stretched polity where life and activity are already in very poor state. Citizens are facing trying times perhaps never experienced in the life of this country.

Before the presentation, so much hype had been made and the expectations of Nigerians were that this is basically going to be the budget that the nation has been waiting for, both in terms of quantity and quality.
