    Outstanding “YES”!

I saw one of the shows on this tour, it was powerful! Some bands, can replace members & move on? “YES” is not one of these bands! “YES” has one irreplaceable voice? Jon Anderson! Every musician on “YES”? Is special in their own unique form! Rick Wakeman playing keyboards has no equal! Chris Squire, God Rest His Soul, & his bass playing was unique! As well as Steve Howe! Here? Trevor Rabin rocks! Drums & bass are more than up to the task & show it with a tribute to Chris, by playing “The Fish”! The classics sound great, so do the newer “YES” songs, from the early 80’s! “You know you’re getting old when.....”

    Shameful!

There's too much fake corwd noise. Plus it doesnt seem to be a good way to honor Squire to steal his band's name and then badmouth them in the press.

An essential Yes live video with one glaring flaw

Let’s put aside the politics and the other version of Yes (who should be judged on their own elsewhere). This is a wonderfully produced live video and what will later be considered a classic and one of the quintessential live recordings by Yes. The video production is impeccable and the audio mix by Trevor Rabin and Paul Linford is second to none. The only modern-era Yes videos that are comparable in quality and spectacle to this one are Songs from Tsongas and Symphonic Live, both of which are luckily available on iTunes in HD. Chris Squire, his bass and vocals are sorely missed, but this group of musicians is just amazing in their own right and puts on an amazing show to celebrate Yes music. However, the amazing sound is in part ruined by excessive use of obviously fake audience noise. I have mixed a few live recordings myself and I realize it’s necessary to boost the audience cheers between songs or in very specific places during the songs to enhance the live feel for the listener of the album. Otherwise it would feel lifeless. This live album/video does it excessively, though. The venue is relatively small, and you can see there is no conceivable way this kind of (ageing) audience couldn’t produce this kind of audience noise. The illusion does not work, and it errs on the wrong side. The mix should have boosted the cheers between songs and in a few and far between moments during songs (such as after impressive solos mid-song), copying the actual audience reaction, and it would have been perfect. A shame. This could have been a contender for the best latter-day Yes live album/video, but like this it’s “only” among the best ones. The amazing performance and sound production (the fake audience notwithstanding) are its saving graces.
